Mandheling, Ankola, and Lintong coffees grown in Sumatra are among the world's most delicious premium coffees. These coffees are characterized by their full-bodied richness, more earthy flavors than Java Arabica, with distinctive herbaceous notes and low acidity.

At FrontStreet Coffee's bean menu, there are several types of Mandheling coffee from Sumatra, such as Lintong Mandheling, Golden Mandheling, Tiger Mandheling, and Aged Mandheling. Mandheling flavor enthusiasts can try them one by one.

This low acidity makes them particularly appealing to those who are sensitive to the healthy organic acids in coffee. Sumatran coffee is widely acclaimed and renowned globally for providing rich, satisfying flavors.

Green Coffee

Sumatran coffee is known to be excellent for home roasting, using a medium roast level, but is also suitable for dark roasting because their rich, spicy flavors persist in dark roasts. This, combined with relatively low prices, makes them an excellent addition to blends.

Green coffee importers typically sell unroasted green coffee in 132-pound bags to large roasters and distributors, who may or may not divide them into smaller bulk bags for home or professional roasters.

Lintong's standard processing method is known as "Giling Basah," a traditional process where coffee beans are hulled with 50% moisture content instead of 11%, giving Sumatran green coffee beans a dark appearance. The beans are "triple-picked," meaning they are sorted three times for defects to achieve consistency not found elsewhere.

The Best Coffee

It is recommended to purchase freshly roasted coffee beans, and Sumatran coffee is no exception. Ready-made coffee often sits in the distribution chain for weeks or months, resulting in bland coffee compared to freshly roasted. The best coffee is freshly roasted coffee.

Coffee from any region of Sumatra is best grown at high altitudes - above 1,350 meters is ideal. This slows the growth process, giving plants more time to provide nutrients and minerals to the coffee beans, so they have more fuel to develop fuller, richer flavors.

Bird-friendly and shade-grown certifications also help slow the growth process, reduce photosynthesis, and develop the best qualities of coffee beans.
