Sweet Orange Estate Coffee

Honduras Sweet Orange Estate

Not only is Honduran coffee outstanding in flavor, but surprisingly, since 2011, Honduras's coffee production has surpassed Guatemala's, making it the largest coffee-producing country in Central America and ranking among the top ten in world coffee production!

Sweet Orange Estate El Naranjo

Sweet Orange Estate (El Naranjo) is located in Marcala, part of the La Paz region, producing coffee comparable to another Honduran region, Santa Barbara. The estate is named after its shade trees - tall wild orange trees. Currently, the estate grows Catuai, Caturra, Bourbon, and Geisha varieties. The bean we're trying this time is Catuai.

Catuai is a coffee variety artificially hybridized from Caturra and Mondu Novo, with good resistance to natural disasters, especially wind and rain. Catuai trees are relatively short, and compared to other coffee trees, Catuai fruits grow more firmly, making them difficult to pick.

Honduran Coffee Regions and Flavors

Honduras has six main coffee regions, primarily located in the western and southern parts: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, Agalta Tropical, and El Paraiso. Among them, three are major regions:

  1. Montecillos: The highest-altitude estates in Honduras, producing coffee with bright and complex flavors, full of rich fruit and sweet aromas, with citrus notes.
  2. Copan: Copan coffee beans have chocolate flavors, a full-bodied taste, and high sweetness.
  3. Agalta Tropical: Coffee beans from this region have balanced honey sweetness and acidity, with chocolate notes.

Generally, Honduran coffee has high body and sweetness, with fruity notes, but sometimes carries nutty and toffee aromas, making it a quite complex coffee.

Honduran Coffee Grading

Honduran coffee uses a grading system based on altitude and defect rate. The defect rate grading is divided into American and European standards, which we won't elaborate on here. The altitude grading is as follows:

  1. Strictly High Grown (SHG): Over 1,200 meters.
  2. High Grown (HG): Over 1,000 meters.
  3. Central Standard (CS): Grown at altitudes over 600 meters.
