Reading a Coffee Bag: What the Label Is Really Telling You

A coffee bag can raise more questions than it answers. Altitude, dark roast, light roast, and a list of flavour notes, all stacked on a small label. Why does altitude in particular keep appearing?

Once you know what these terms mean, they stop being decoration and start working for you, pointing you toward the coffees you actually enjoy. That is what this guide is for: what the words mean, and what to check before you buy.

What Belongs on a Coffee Label

The most useful details to look for are the country and region of origin, the variety, the roast date and roast level, and any certifications. These matter not only because they hint at quality, but because they explain why you like a particular coffee, which is the fastest route to buying something similar next time.

Why Altitude Earns a Place on the Label

Altitude is worth explaining properly, because it maps onto flavour. As a general rule, the higher a coffee is grown, the sweeter it tastes. There are exceptions, since variety and origin bend the rule, and low-altitude coffees grown far from the equator also tend to be sweeter than you might expect.

What Else Should You Look For?

Processing describes how the beans were separated from the coffee cherry. Some methods give a clean-tasting cup, while others push toward sweetness and fruit.

You will also see flavour notes such as "chocolate finish" or "high acidity." These take some practice to detect, but they are a genuinely useful signpost when you are choosing between bags.

It can feel like a lot to absorb, but once you start reading labels the pattern becomes obvious quickly. Try it with a coffee you already love: work out what on the label explains your attachment to it, and you have a reliable method for finding the next one.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Queen Manor is a good example of reading a label end to end. It is grown in Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer, and the variety is the distinctive yellow bourbon. A medium roast keeps the cup sweet and clean, with cream, peanut, chocolate, toasted bread and sugarcane coming through. It is forgiving enough for pour-over and rich enough for a moka pot or espresso machine.

FrontStreet Coffee's Strawberry Candy Geisha blend shows how origin and process combine on one label. It brings together a honey-processed Costa Rican coffee and a washed Panamanian Geisha, roasted medium so both sides show: the orange-blossom honey character of Geisha, and a rounder sweetness that suits cold brew, pour-over and espresso alike.

FrontStreet Coffee's 2013 Sun-dried Typica is a label with a very specific story. As a Chinese specialty coffee, it expresses the classic Yunnan profile, and it is roasted medium to keep that balance intact: nuts, brown sugar, black tea and dried apricot. It works as pour-over, cold brew or in a drip machine, and it is one of the most affordable ways to explore a single variety.

Finally, FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain No.1 is grown from Typica, one of the world's most respected Arabica varieties, and the medium roast fuses its acidity, bitterness, sweetness and body into one elegant whole. Chocolate, roasted nuts, cream and caramel arrive the moment it hits the palate.
