Understanding Different Roast Levels of Kona Coffee

Like most other coffees, Kona has different roasting methods. How exactly do different roasts affect the flavor and taste of Kona coffee?

Let's compare the different states presented by various roast levels of Kona coffee:

Dark Roast

Kona dark roast brings you an unforgettable bold, audacious flavor. Before you even have a chance to taste, your nostrils are filled with the aroma of roasting. Vanilla honey, and even a hint of popcorn, are also prominent flavors in Kona dark roast. There's a hint of strawberry associated with Kona dark roast. However, it's more like an aftertaste and a pleasure to enjoy. It's well known that dark roasting with a plate of food or chocolate desserts can truly extract the flavors in the coffee. The beans will have some natural oils on their surface at this roast level, but it's worth noting that due to the deep degree of coffee roasting, one should always be vigilant.

Medium Roast

When you taste the perfect balance between fruit and chocolate, you know you've found the right medium roast Kona blend. The aroma straight from the bag is one of raw almonds and peaches. Rich wine notes and low acidity, medium roast evokes delicious desserts. Sweet almond, peach, and marzipan flavors delight your taste buds. Despite having a sweet profile, medium roast Kona pairs well with pork and beef dishes. For breakfast, it can also be paired with a plate of syrup pancakes. Both bring out the flavor of the medium roast.

This is a relatively light roast that's very suitable for Kona coffee beans. It brings out the typical nutty, chocolatey, and slight cinnamon flavors of Kona coffee. It has a medium-deep color and is sometimes called medium or medium-dark roast.

Light Roast

Light roast of Kona blend showcases subtle flavors of berry jam and caramel with hints of hazelnut. There might even be a hint of jasmine, with a slightly earthy aftertaste. Light roast pairs perfectly with pastries and fruits. Light roast is also an ideal choice for Kona as a refreshing summer drink cold brew. The beans are roasted to a medium to light brown color, with no natural oils on the beans. Coffee at this roast level will taste slightly sweeter and have higher caffeine content.

To ensure everyone gets the best experience, FrontStreet Coffee, after conducting multiple experiments, has chosen to use medium roast for the Queen's Estate coffee in the shop to present the best flavors. The most important aspect of medium roast Kona is achieving a balanced nectar sweetness and smooth texture.
