What Makes You Frequently Visit a Coffee Shop? What Kind of Coffee Shop Attracts You?
Sitting in my regular café on a scorching summer day, enjoying the air conditioning while typing away,
Suddenly someone pushes the door open and shouts:
"Boss! One as usual, to go, thank you!"
"Alright, got it!"
Translation: "Boss, one coffee the same as last time, to go, thank you!"
Location: Guangzhou.
As someone who frequently visits cafés, I often hear this exchange.
I believe similar scenarios are quite common in your cities too, haha.
I believe many friends are people who value the quality of third spaces (this writer included)
After work on weekdays or during rest days, I enjoy visiting cafés. However, when visiting, I never take the perspective of a barista – I purely go to have a cup of coffee, giving myself an opportunity to switch roles and catch my breath.
What makes you frequently return to this coffee shop?
Internet user Ah Zhen:
• Convenient, fast, easy to reach and leave;
• Wide variety of single-origin coffees, regularly updated seasonal beans, suitable for trying new flavors;
• Background music, atmosphere, aroma;
• Air conditioning temperature, seat comfort.
Internet user Ah Qiang:
• In a convenient transportation location, preferably with parking available;
• Sufficient interesting choices, reasonable prices, willing to pay for something special;
• Clean and tidy storefront, preferably with customers mainly being coffee enthusiasts;
• Able to chat with the barista/owner.
The "third space" is a theory/concept widely applied in sociology, urban planning, and commerce,
Generally speaking, human daily life is mainly distributed across three living spaces:
First Space - Home/Residence,
Second Space - Company/Work,
Third Space - Social Venues/Leisure, Entertainment, and Communication.
In my view, the "third space" serves as a transition and connection between the first and second spaces. Having a quality "third space" is quite important to me.
Approachability and Human Touch!
Approachability, or service attitude, is a powerful weapon.
Differentiation between shops often manifests in this aspect.
From Stranger to Regular!
A café is actually a complex entity, even a "life station."
Simply put, it's about being able to chat with the barista/owner/other regular customers.
I believe many friends have had this experience:
Passing by a coffee shop with a decent-looking storefront, when the weather is very hot and your phone is about to die, so you go in with a try-it-out attitude to borrow some power, while enjoying the air conditioning and WiFi, then order the cheapest drink, and unconsciously, the barista or fellow customers start a conversation... and then you gradually become a regular customer.
Resonance!
Cafés need to do small things to create memory points between customers and their establishment, especially community-based small shops.
Here's an immature suggestion: when necessary, provide some services unrelated to business, and try not to refuse appropriate small favors.
If you've persevered to read to the end, I believe your love for coffee is no longer a one-day affair!
Welcome everyone to share in the comments what attracts you to regularly visit your favorite café!
