Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union YCFCU | Flavor Characteristics of Gedeb and Werka Cooperative Coffee

The Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union - abbreviated as YCFCU - was established in June 2002 and shortly thereafter registered as a cooperative through proclamation (No. 147/1998). The union began with 13 member organizations. Currently, these primary cooperatives were established to serve as political weapons of the Derg regime. These 13 cooperatives were continuously interfered with in terms of resources and finances by the then-government and other institutional organizations, always being exploited and working under corrupt and adverse conditions. After the fall of the former regime, as the socialist model had become outdated, the primary cooperatives ceased operations. They lacked ownership or governance, which in turn made it unprofitable to attract farmers who would lead to their bankruptcy. After the cooperative proclamation was issued, coffee farmers were reluctant to start new cooperative experiences. Coupled with the coffee crisis in the late 1990s, the primary cooperatives were not prepared to join until the union was established with strong credibility. In the few years that followed, the union began to grow and prosper, as it had already proven itself worthy as a creditor and guarantor for primary cooperatives. This is the success record of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union.

Since then, the union has grown to include 28 cooperative unions with over 45,100 farmers, supporting more than 300,000 family members. All these cooperatives are located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. This region is situated in an area of the country famous for coffee cultivation. These 62,000 hectares of gardens are exclusively dedicated to coffee cultivation, producing an average of 15,500 tons of Yirgacheffe coffee annually.

Introduction to Gedeb and Werka Cooperative Coffee

FrontStreet Coffee will provide a simple introduction to the coffee beans from the two major cooperatives of Gedeb and Werka.

This coffee bean is processed by the Werka Cooperative. Alemayehu Alako farm is a member of the Werka Cooperative. This washed coffee is pure, refreshing, with distinctive floral aromas. Both dry and wet aromas reveal rich citrus notes, with lemon, kumquat, white grape juice and similar flavors at the forefront. It has a sweetness reminiscent of soda.

Werka Cooperative Coffee Beans

Gedeb village is one of the village areas that became independent several years ago (Banko Gotiti separated from the large Werka Cooperative in 2012). Many individual small-scale farmers were also members of the original Werka Cooperative, so their coffee production techniques are naturally excellent.

This washed coffee presents floral, berry, and citrus flavors with a slight tea-like finish.
