Coffee latte art has always attracted many young people. Beautiful coffee latte art may not enhance the flavor of coffee, but it can give you a good mood to appreciate this cup of coffee. This issue of Barista Training will teach everyone how to create a textured tulip latte art!

Preparation Stage

The two essential materials for latte art are espresso with moderate crema and fine, highly flowable milk foam. For espresso, FrontStreet Coffee uses Sunflower Warm Blend Coffee (Sherry Blend Red Cherry), where sherry coffee beans provide rich coffee crema.

Milk selection for latte art

For milk, choose pasteurized whole fresh milk. The milk foam thickness should be steamed from 5 parts milk to 6 parts full, creating strong flowability. Thinner milk foam has better flowability, allowing for the creation of beautiful lines for textured patterns. Conversely, if the milk foam is too thick, it will result in poor milk flowability, making it difficult to create textured patterns. For how to steam fine milk foam, please refer to FrontStreet Coffee's previous article: [Barista Training | Teaching You to Steam Fine and Dense Milk Foam!!].

Latte Art Stage

FrontStreet Coffee uses a 300ml latte coffee cup, with espresso weight of 40g. First, you need to combine the milk and espresso. The standard for combination is that the crema is fully "stirred" evenly by the milk, with a golden surface color, and no large air bubbles should be produced. Combine until the cup is 4/5 full.

Milk and espresso combination

Next, begin creating the textured pattern. For the first textured layer, the milk entry point should be at the center position. Keep the steam wand tip as close to the liquid surface as possible, while shaking evenly and slowly moving the milk pitcher tip forward, pushing to the center and then lifting the pitcher.

First textured layer technique

Next, repeat the same motion, starting the pattern at the 1/4 position, shake evenly while pushing forward until reaching the center, then lift the pitcher after being enveloped by the first textured layer.

Second textured layer technique

Finally, also at the 1/4 position, create a small heart shape by releasing milk steadily, thin the milk flow, raise the latte art pitcher, move forward to the bottom of the first textured layer, and lift the pitcher.

Important Notes

1. The milk foam thickness should not be too thick. Textured patterns require milk to have good flowability; otherwise, it will be difficult to create textured patterns and beautiful lines.

Proper milk foam consistency

2. The shaking amplitude should be uniform. The pitcher spout should be aligned with the centerline of the coffee cup; otherwise, the textured pattern will lack symmetrical beauty.

Proper pitcher alignment

3. Hold the coffee cup with your left hand and return it to level at a constant speed, avoiding large amplitude shaking.
