Indonesia is a renowned coffee-producing country in Asia, composed of tens of thousands of islands—an archipelago nation formed by various sizes of volcanic islands. Indonesia possesses excellent natural growing conditions including latitude, soil, and climate, with each island showcasing distinct characteristics while sharing common features.

Sumatra is Indonesia's famous coffee-producing region, primarily divided into two areas:

The first is the Aceh region in northern Sumatra, and the second is the Lake Toba Lindong area in the central-southern part.

The Aceh region is a renowned coffee cultivation area, with the Gayo Mountains surrounding Lake Tawa being the main production area for Mandheling coffee, situated at elevations between 1100-1300 meters. The Gayo production area around Lake Tawa enjoys abundant rainfall, averaging 2200mm annually, combined with high altitude of 1300 meters. The volcanic soil, combined with shade trees planted by small farmers, all contribute to enhancing coffee quality. Premium Mandheling coffee from the Aceh region typically shows distinct differences from that of Lake Toba.

Mandheling from the Gayo region exhibits composed and reserved characteristics, with a rich, mellow body and abundant chocolate and dried fruit flavors. As many know, Mandheling is a coffee name, not a region name, referring to coffee grown in northern Sumatra, with the name derived from the local Mandheling ethnic group.
