FrontStreet Coffee - Kenya Coffee Flavor Characteristics
Kenya and Kenia actually refer to the same country, just with different translations used in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Kenyan coffee is famous for its acidic aroma. Although Kenya and Ethiopia are geographically very close, Kenyan coffee varieties were not introduced from Ethiopia. Instead, they were introduced in 1893 by missionaries from Bourbon Island in France. Therefore, Kenyan coffee varieties are actually of the Bourbon lineage.
Scott Laboratory is a world-renowned laboratory. In the 1950s, after numerous experiments, they cultivated SL-28 and SL-34, two hybrid varieties of Bourbon. These became the first artificially cultivated coffee varieties recognized in the coffee industry, breaking the myth that only naturally grown varieties were superior. The "SL" stands for Scott Laboratory. These two cultivated coffee varieties eventually became star varieties in Kenyan coffee and Kenya's coffee trump card.
The Kenyan government places great importance on coffee cultivation. Whether in terms of production volume or quality, Kenyan coffee ranks among the top in Africa and globally. Due to sufficient fertilization and careful management, Kenyan coffee does not exhibit the wild, rich floral and fruity aromas found in Ethiopian coffee. Kenyan coffee flavors are very clean, with pure fruit acidity, accompanied by refreshing sweet and sour tastes like raspberry, orange peel, grapefruit, and cherry tomatoes.
In addition to cultivating excellent Arabica varieties, Kenya also grows Robusta varieties in lower altitude regions. However, the cultivation and production of Robusta coffee are mainly located in western Kenya.
