FrontStreet Coffee - Kenya Coffee Flavors and Refined Processing Methods

Today, FrontStreet Coffee would like to share with you the story of Kenyan coffee! Geographically, Kenya is very close to Ethiopia and is also considered one of the cradles of humanity (human skull fossils dating back approximately 2.5 million years have been discovered within its territory). However, Kenyan coffee did not originate from Ethiopia. The current mainstream view is that around 1893, missionaries brought Bourbon variety coffee from the French Bourbon Island (Réunion Island) to Kenya and other regions. Therefore, many mainstream Kenyan coffee varieties belong to the Bourbon lineage (one of the important branches of Arabica coffee).

In the 1950s, the world-renowned Scott Laboratory selected and bred SL-28 and SL-34 hybrid varieties from numerous experimental results. This was the first time in the coffee industry that the quality of artificially selected varieties was recognized, breaking the myth that only natural varieties were the most excellent.

Due to the great importance placed at the governmental level, combined with the joint efforts of farms, cooperatives, farmers, and research institutes, Kenyan coffee ranks among the top in Africa and even worldwide in both production and quality. Therefore, Kenyan coffee is also known as the "Heart of Africa."

Because of adequate fertilization and meticulous care, the "Heart of Africa" does not possess the wild and rich floral and fruity aromas of Ethiopian coffee. Instead, its flavors are generally very clean, with extremely pure fruit acidity, accompanied by the light and sweet-tart aromas of raspberry, orange peel, grapefruit, and cherry tomatoes.

Kenyan coffee beans are generally processed using the refined washed method, as the washed processing method is the most relied upon for specialty coffee beans. Generally speaking, coffee processed through this method has the purest flavor, the least off-flavors, and the optimal fruit aroma and acidity. Therefore, refined washing is the main processing method for Kenyan coffee.
