Mandheling coffee actually has a story behind it. Around 1945, Japanese soldiers stationed in Sumatra drank the locally produced coffee and found it exceptionally delicious. When they tried to ask the vendor about the coffee's name, due to language barriers, the Mandheling vendor misunderstood and thought they were asking where he came from, so he answered "Mandheling."
Several years later, after being discharged from military service, the Japanese soldiers still couldn't forget this wonderful taste. They traveled to Sumatra to inquire about exporting the local "Mandheling coffee" to Japan, which then became popular and continues to this day. Indonesia is one of the major coffee bean producing countries. The main producing regions are located near the equator on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. In reality, the aroma and taste of coffee beans produced on each island are different. Even the same coffee bean variety can produce various and rich taste experiences depending on its origin.
Mandheling is favored among many lovers of rich coffee. The first sip reveals a honey-like sweetness with a gentle bitterness, creating waves of sweet aroma and throat notes. This bean possesses excellent sweetness characteristics and a pleasant aftertaste. Mandheling was once acclaimed as the world's finest unique wet-hulled coffee beans. Our country's evaluation of Mandheling coffee is extremely high, making it one of the most accepted single-origin coffee products, second only to Japan.
Today, any coffee green beans produced from red cherry fruits harvested in Indonesia and processed using the unique wet-hulled method are sold under the name Mandheling coffee beans.
However, not all Mandheling is Golden Mandheling. Golden Mandheling is produced by Indonesia's finest coffee company, P.W.N. PWN is the abbreviation of Indonesia's Pawani company. The Golden Mandheling produced by P.W.N. is packaged in 30-kilogram bags, each with a certificate of authenticity. The English name "Golden Mandheling" has now been registered by Pawani company in Indonesia.
Golden Mandheling is hand-harvested using refined agricultural processing techniques and employs manual selection methods. Through four rounds of screening and selection to eliminate defective beans, high-quality coffee beans are produced. Generally, Mandheling from Sumatra carries some earthy notes, with a strong grassy aftertaste, and deep roasting can bring out bitterness. In contrast, the carefully selected Golden Mandheling beans are plump and full, offering rich aroma and a flavor profile that is more intense, rounded, and mellow than regular Mandheling. After drinking, there's a subtle sweet aftertaste, making it the best choice for those who enjoy adding milk!
The renowned Mandheling is an Asian coffee bean. Asian beans typically have high body, and the characteristic flavor of Mandheling beans includes herbal notes. Most roasters typically use medium-dark roasting to pursue the unique richness characteristic of Asian beans.
