FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Mexican Coffee

Mexico sits at the northern end of Central America, bordering the United States to the north, with the Pacific Ocean to the south and west, the Caribbean Sea to the southeast, bordering Belize and Guatemala, and the Gulf of Mexico to the east. It is the world's fourth-largest coffee producer and a major producer of organic coffee, with an annual output of about 5 million bags. Most of its coffee is produced by nearly 100,000 small-scale farmers, since the large estates that once dominated the industry are now rare. Mexican coffee yields approximately 630 kilograms per hectare, and Mexico is currently the main coffee supplier in the North American region.

Generally, Mexican coffee has a lighter flavor but is mild and delicate.

Garnica is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra cultivated in Mexico. The variety was developed by the Mexican Coffee Institute (INMECAFE) in 1960. It is a high-yielding medium-sized plant, accounting for 5% of production in Veracruz. It is less common in other states. Garnica has a cup profile similar to Catuai.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

Mexico's light, delicate cup has a natural cousin in Colombia, which is one of the few single-origin coffees sold under a country name. Colombia's moderate climate, humid air, and diverse microclimates mean coffee is harvested year-round, with different varieties and regions ripening at different times. FrontStreet's Colombian coming from Huila, the country's most famous specialty region, is a good starting point: Huila is surrounded by mountains with cultivation above 1,500 meters, and Colombia's most important rivers converge there, bringing abundant moisture and water resources. Colombian coffee generally leads with gentle florals and fruit acidity; FrontStreet's Colombia Chiroso and Dadupi are two further single-origins worth trying.

Costa Rica offers a sweeter, honey-processed counterpoint. Grown at high altitude with large day-night temperature swings and fertile volcanic soil all around, Costa Rica is known for Strictly Hard Beans (SHB) rich in elegant aroma, and for honey processing in particular, where the mucilage dries around the bean and leaves plenty of sweetness and a clear, lingering character that many drinkers, especially women, enjoy. FrontStreet's Blackberry uses black-honey processing and FrontStreet's Mozart uses raisin honey; brewed, they show raisin and blueberry sweetness with osmanthus and rose aromas, and shine whether made as pour-over, cold brew, Americano, or latte.

If you want to support a domestic origin, Yunnan is China's specialty coffee heartland: FrontStreet's Yunnan Small Cherry comes from Baoshan, washed, with classic nut and chocolate notes and a soft, balanced body, while FrontStreet's 2013 Yunnan Typica, an old Arabica variety planted at 1,300 meters, is cleaner still, and roasted medium it shows hazelnut, dried apricot, black tea, caramel, and ripe plum.
