FrontStreet Coffee Pink Bourbon Introduction
Bourbon coffee was originally cultivated on Bourbon Island (now known as Réunion Island), located approximately 650km east of the famous Madagascar Island.
The Bourbon variety, alongside Typica, ranks as one of the oldest existing premium coffee varieties.
Tracing back to its origins, Bourbon and Typica actually share the same lineage. The earliest Typica varieties transplanted to Bourbon Island underwent several generations of natural reproduction, leading to genetic mutations in the tree species. Whether in terms of vitality, disease resistance, tree appearance, or cupping flavor, significant improvements were made compared to the original Typica variety. This new variety was later named after the island - the Bourbon variety.
Bourbon coffee originates from a natural mutation of the Typica coffee variety and is also a historically significant variety. Both varieties belong to the Arabica species. Typical Bourbon coffee beans transition from green to mature bright red fruits - what we know as Red Bourbon. The fruits are relatively short and round, also called Round Bourbon, with high density in both pulp and seeds, featuring high sweetness and bright acidity.
However, besides Red Bourbon, there are also Yellow Bourbon, the rare Orange Bourbon, and the precious Pink Bourbon.
Pink Bourbon is a natural hybrid of Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon. Both Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon coffee express "dominant genes" showing "dominant traits" with relatively strong reproductive stability. In contrast, the new variety Pink Bourbon, resulting from their hybridization, expresses "recessive genes" showing "recessive traits," making the offspring from hybrid reproduction highly prone to trait segregation.
Furthermore, coffee trees reproduce sexually through pollen, and other tree species with dominant traits can easily pollinate Pink Bourbon, severely affecting the flowering and fruiting of the next season. This is the primary reason why Yellow and Red Bourbon are more common, while Pink Bourbon is rarely seen.
