FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Cuban Coffee
When it comes to Cuban coffee, many people probably think of Crystal Mountain coffee first! But actually, "Crystal Mountain" is not the name of a growing region in Cuba, but rather a grade in the Cuban official coffee association's grading system!
The Cuban Coffee Association classifies coffee beans into nine grades according to particle size and flavor: Crystal Mountain, Extra Turquino, Turquino, Altura, Montana, Cumbre, Serrano Superior, Serrano Corriente, and Caracolillo.
The classification is divided into ETL (Extra), TL (Medium), and AL (Ordinary) based on coffee bean size. Crystal Mountain is Cuba's proudest high-quality large premium coffee bean, which means Crystal Mountain coffee can be called synonymous with top-tier Cuban coffee!
"Cuban Coffee"
There are a few Cuban coffee preparation methods that have spread worldwide, such as: Cortadito, Cafe con Leche, and Cafe Cubano. Cafe Cubano is an espresso brewed by adding sugar to the coffee grounds.
Although seeing "Cuban coffee" is quite common in many countries, authentic Cuban coffee is actually illegal in the United States. "Cuban coffee" usually refers to Cafe Cubano, and coffee from Brazil is often used to describe the flavor that Cuban coffee should have. However, this situation raises concerns about confusing consumers and often leads to chaos in labeling.
