Blended coffee beans, also known as comprehensive coffee beans, are created by combining various single-origin coffee beans to fully showcase the unique characteristics of each bean variety while simultaneously masking certain flavor imperfections. Comprehensive blends are composed of coffee beans from different origins, resulting in a more balanced flavor profile. For instance, if one coffee bean lacks body despite its smooth texture, another bean with rich body can be added to complement and enhance each other's strengths, creating a more complex and novel flavor experience. Sometimes the beans are mixed before roasting—a method called "raw blending"—while other times they are blended after roasting, known as "roasted blending."
Whether using raw blending or roasted blending, before creating a blend, one must first understand the distinct flavor profiles of different coffee varieties from around the world. Beans from different origins each possess unique characteristics. Different coffee beans exhibit varying personalities due to differences in variety and origin, with subtle variations in acidity, bitterness, sweetness, aroma, and body. To create better blends, roasters must not only have thorough knowledge of coffee bean characteristics but also master sophisticated roasting techniques. Therefore, crafting an excellent blend remains a challenging endeavor.
Blended beans are commonly used for espresso-based coffees such as Espresso, Americano, Latte, or Cappuccino. The resulting coffee has a more balanced and smoother taste with consistent flavor, making it more appealing to the general public.
Single-origin beans refer to coffee beans from a single variety or origin. With the third wave of specialty coffee, an increasing number of coffee shops are offering single-origin coffees. According to the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE), the emergence of single-origin coffee emphasizes traceability, allowing coffee enthusiasts to understand the unique characteristics of the estate where this high-quality coffee originates. The flavor represents its origin, region, and variety. It is precisely this third wave of coffee culture, which emphasizes the pursuit of coffee knowledge such as brewing methods and origin flavors, that has made single-origin coffee more popular. Single-origin beans are generally suitable for pour-over, cold drip, and cold brew methods.
