FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Coffee Growing Regions and Flavors
Coffee bean growing regions are mainly divided into: Africa, Central and South America, Asia and Island Regions.
African Bean Flavors
Among African coffees, Ethiopian coffee flavors are particularly prominent, with rich orange aromas. Kenyan coffee offers intense berry-like acidity, along with the tart aromas of plum juice and grapefruit, as well as the sweet fragrance of sugarcane. The orange aroma of Ethiopian coffee and the berry fragrance of Kenyan coffee are the greatest characteristics of African beans, making them favorites among global acidity-loving connoisseurs and coffee enthusiasts who delight in studying these nuances.
Central and South American Bean Flavors
Generally speaking, American coffee beans have relatively conventional flavors. Brazilian coffee offers moderate body, while Costa Rican coffee is mild and smooth, with acidity, sweetness, and chocolate aromas blended together in perfect balance. Panamanian coffee features rich and intense citrus aromas, fresh jasmine fragrance, nutty almond notes, mango flavors, and honey-like sweetness, with bright and varied fruit acidity that remarkably resembles Ethiopia's national treasure Yirgacheffe, thus attracting many admirers. Pacamara coffee carries pleasant spicy notes with subtle ginger undertones, along with acidity and floral-fruit flavors. The most distinctive feature of Nicaraguan coffee is its charming almond flavor, with a relatively subdued aromatic profile.
Asian and Island Bean Flavors
Asian beans have higher body than Central and South American and African beans, but lower acidity, with flavors that hint at wood, herbal, spice, and earthy notes. The subdued aromatic profile dominates over the bright acidity. Island beans are relatively light and mild, with an elegant character.
Coffee Flavor Characteristics
Sweetness
How much sweetness does this coffee bean have? This is a highly desirable characteristic in coffee, and naturally, the more the better.
Acidity
How much acidity does this coffee bean have? Is the acidity pleasant? If the acidity has predominantly unpleasant components, it will be described as sour. Pleasant acidity tastes refreshing and juicy.
Mouthfeel
Does this coffee have a light, delicate, tea-like mouthfeel? Or does it possess rich, creamy, and thick characteristics? Again, more isn't always better. Low-quality coffee beans often have thick mouthfeel with low acidity, but they are typically difficult to drink.
Balance
This is the most difficult characteristic to define during tasting. Many different flavors appear in a sip of coffee, but are these flavors harmonious? Do they resemble a perfectly composed piece of music? Or is there one element that stands out too much? Is any particular characteristic too strong?
Flavor
This category not only describes the various flavors and aromas present in a coffee but also considers whether the taster enjoys the performance of this cup. Many beginning tasters often feel frustrated in this area—they can clearly taste that each coffee bean is different, yet they cannot find sufficient vocabulary to describe them.
