FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Colombia's Cauca Region

The Cauca Department is part of Colombia's coffee-growing regions with certified origin, located in the southwestern part of Colombia, bordering the Narino Department and Huila Department. It stands as one of Colombia's important specialty coffee-producing regions.

Eighty percent of Cauca Province is mountainous, with an average altitude of around 1,800 meters, reaching up to 2,100 meters at its highest points. The eastern and central parts feature parallel mountain ranges that are part of the famous Andes Mountains. The central mountain system includes two main volcanoes (Sotara and Petacas), while its boundary winds along the perennially snow-capped Huila mountains. The Cauca coffee-growing region is surrounded by towering mountains that not only block the airflow and moisture from the Pacific Ocean but also prevent the trade winds from the south. Combined with its proximity to the equator, this ensures the region maintains a stable, humid climate with ample sunshine year-round. The region's unique topography, climate, rainfall patterns, and nutrient-rich volcanic ash soil provide an exceptionally favorable and unique environment for growing high-quality coffee.

The most significant climatic difference between Cauca and other growing regions is its relatively large day-night temperature variation. The annual average temperature difference is approximately 11°C, while the average daytime temperature is around 18°C. The day-night temperature variation is a crucial factor in producing high-quality coffee. The relatively low nighttime temperatures combined with high altitude slow down the coffee growth rhythm, allowing coffee seeds and beans to fully absorb nutrients from the coffee fruit. This results in Cauca coffee's superior acidity and its particularly remarkable sweetness, which is especially praised in the industry.

Following Colombia's excellent traditions, all coffee from the Cauca region is hand-picked and processed using the washed method, ensuring the high quality of its green coffee beans. Premium Cauca coffee typically exhibits rich floral aromas, high acidity, pleasant sweetness, medium body, and a clean, mild mouthfeel. It mainly showcases a series of special flavors similar to berries, caramel, dark chocolate, and grapefruit, with a sweet aftertaste that leaves a lasting impression.

Knowledge Point

High-quality coffee cherries generally benefit from good shade coverage. Tree shade can block the high-temperature midday sun, slow down the coffee's metabolic rate, and help develop nutrients, fruit acids, and aromatic compounds.
