Sidamo Guji - Natural Process Sidamo Coffee Characteristics Introduction
FrontStreet Coffee's Introduction to Sidamo Coffee Characteristics
The Sidama premium coffee region is located in southern Ethiopia, southwest of the Yirgacheffe area. As is well known, Ethiopian coffee has always been synonymous with specialty coffee and is among the world's finest coffees. Ethiopia is also the birthplace of coffee. Ethiopian coffees are basically named after their producing regions—for example, the well-known Yirgacheffe region produces Yirgacheffe coffee, the Sidamo region produces Sidamo coffee, and so on.
The industry in the Sidamo region is predominantly agricultural, with coffee growing areas mainly located around the Great Rift Valley. The elevation ranges from 1500 to 2200 meters, featuring high altitude, abundant sunshine, and plentiful rainfall.
The greatest advantage of this region lies in its soil fertility, which is maintained through the recycling of organic matter, using fallen leaves from surrounding trees or residual plant roots as fertilizer. The original ecological growing environment has created distinct differences and characteristics in the coffee produced by its towns. The processing method of coffee profoundly affects the flavor expression, and Sidamo coffee is no exception. Washed Sidamo exhibits bright, clean taste characteristics, with fresh fruit and straightforward floral notes, presenting a bright and clear texture.
Natural processed Sidamo, on the other hand, displays rustic yet intense fruity flavors—sweet, juicy, with ripe fruit tastes, and a body reminiscent of red wine. For example, Sidamo Flower Queen reveals the sweetness of passionfruit, which appears in both the dry aroma and the aftertaste.
High-quality natural processed coffee requires more meticulous care, with higher demands on weather and coffee cherry ripeness, making it rarer than washed coffee. This distinction applies to almost all coffees.
