You cannot compare Baoshan's Typica with Hawaii Kona or Bolivian Typica. Their cultivation techniques and maturity levels far exceed those of the newly emerging Baoshan Typica. However, the people of Yunnan are making great efforts, and their cultivation and processing techniques are rapidly improving. It's like comparing the educational level of an elementary school student with that of a university student - how can they be mentioned in the same breath? But what's most important is the growth process and the experience and gains summarized during it.
Many people have no hope for China's Yunnan coffee, which shouldn't be the case. A true coffee lover and professional should be open-minded, discovering the advantages and recognizability of coffee from different regions and tree species. Instead of blindly following those high-scoring beans that are commercially hyped and whose added value exceeds their actual worth. Scores are given by people, and the shortcomings of beans can be judged, but their regional characteristics and significance of existence cannot be erased.
Typica: The Classic Premium Arabica
Typica is the most classic premium Arabica variety. Currently, many commercial improved varieties originate from this type. It exhibits excellent flavor characteristics and is recognized as a specialty coffee variety. However, it has extremely low yield and is susceptible to rust disease, requiring more labor management. Typica coffee originates from Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan and is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in the Western Hemisphere. The plants are relatively robust but not tolerant to strong light, with higher yields in Hawaii. The top leaves of Typica are reddish-brown, giving it the name "red-topped coffee." It has distinct floral and melon aromas, moderate acidity, and high sweetness.
