FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Pour-Over Tutorial
Yirgacheffe Single Origin Bean
Coffee beans have specific requirements for their growing environment—they must be cultivated in high-altitude regions with consistent year-round temperatures. Ethiopia's unique geographical advantages ensure the relatively stable high quality of local coffee beans. Among these, the Yirgacheffe growing region, with an altitude ranging from approximately 1700-2100 meters, has made Yirgacheffe synonymous with Ethiopian specialty coffee.
These beans are processed using natural sun-drying methods at an altitude of 1800 meters, and light roasting perfectly bring out the characteristics of African coffee beans—offering pleasant acidity, fruity aromas, and rich layers of flavor. Such a distinctive single-origin bean can only truly showcase its exceptional qualities through pour-over brewing.
Step 2: Prepare Pour-Over Equipment
Grinder + Pour-over kettle + Drip equipment + Compatible filter paper.
Grinder: Freshly ground coffee is essential—always grind just before brewing! I once tried grinding the coffee the night before and bringing it to the office the next day, only to find the flavor completely changed. The original rich aroma had transformed into an overpowering sourness—a truly painful lesson. For home use, I recommend investing in a manual grinder; models priced around 100+ RMB won't be too laborious, and you can enjoy the wonderful aroma released during the grinding process—it adds a sense of ritual to your coffee routine.
Pour-over kettle: During the brewing process, the key is controlling the water flow to ensure it's uniform and vertical, making a pour-over kettle an essential tool! Drip equipment and compatible filter paper: Classic three-hole pour-over drippers or Chemex sharing pots are both excellent choices.
Step 3: Start Brewing Your Pour-Over Coffee
Water-to-coffee ratio: 15-17.5g of coffee grounds to 250ml of water.
Coffee grind size: Medium grind, approximately 0.6mm diameter particles. If ground too finely, it will easily clump during brewing and affect flavor extraction.
Brewing water temperature: 92-95°C. If you don't have a thermometer, this is roughly the temperature after boiling water is poured into the pour-over kettle. If the temperature is too low, the aroma will be difficult to extract; if too high, it will result in excessive bitterness.
Brewing Process
1. Fold the compatible filter paper and place it in the dripper, then rinse with hot water first.
2. Add the ground coffee and try to level it as evenly as possible—you can gently tap the sides to settle the grounds.
3. Pour water evenly and vertically. For the first pour, add just enough to saturate all the coffee grounds.
4. Let it bloom for 20-30 seconds, then slowly pour in the remaining water.
