FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Geisha Coffee Flavor

Geisha coffee beans made their quiet journey from the Geisha Mountains in southwestern Ethiopia in 1931, first exported to Kenya, then wandering through Tanzania and Costa Rica, before finally being transplanted to Panama in the 1960s. After nearly half a century of obscurity, they suddenly rose to prominence, defeating established varieties like Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica to sweep the first place awards in the Panama National Coffee Bean Cupping Competition for three consecutive years in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Due to extremely low production, these beans are truly precious and hard to come by.

In 2007, Geisha once again claimed victory at the International Specialty Coffee Cupping Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), with the winning bid reaching an unprecedented $130 per pound, setting the highest price record in the competition's history.

Geisha coffee beans possess a beautiful blue-green color with a jade-like warm and smooth texture. They exude fresh grass aromas, peach notes, berry fragrances, and a unique milk-sweet scent characteristic of oolong tea that most coffee beans lack.

Floral aromas, tropical fruits, and intense sweetness—these are the sensations that Geisha has consistently brought us. With proper roasting, they offer an experience akin to sipping the fragrance of a fresh bouquet of flowers.

The dry aroma of Geisha is remarkably elevated and bright, featuring characteristics of rose and jasmine, while also bringing out pomelo and citrus notes. Light roasting reveal nutty aromas; the wet aroma similarly presents hazelnut notes while unleashing more floral characteristics.

In terms of flavor profile, the initial taste may seem somewhat gentle and reserved compared to the previously elevated aromas. As it cools slightly, the floral and fruit flavors gradually intensify with the decreasing temperature, and the cold aroma is exceptionally outstanding (sweet preserved fruits, rose hips, orange glaze, strawberry jam, hints of pine, cherry, vanilla, and rose notes gradually recede, giving way to lemon-like fruit fragrance).

The reason Geisha coffee is so popular is that it scores above 90 points in the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scoring system.

"It possesses an incredible aroma, almost like perfume, with rose, jasmine, and bergamot notes," says Willem Boot. "The coffee's delicate flavor and persistent aftertaste are unforgettable—you can taste lime, honey, and papaya, with deep and rich fruit notes."
