FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yunnan Baoshan Coffee
The Baoshan Lujiang Dam area in Yunnan Province is a unique dry-hot valley climate region within Yunnan and even the entire country, highly suitable for the growth of Arabica coffee beans. The Lujiang Dam area in Longyang District is located on the eastern foothills of the Gaoligong Mountains, along both banks of the Nujiang River, situated between longitude 98°44′-99°05′ east and latitude 24°46′-25°33′ north, at elevations ranging from 640 to 3510 meters. Most of the small-bean coffee growing areas are located at elevations between 800-1200 meters, with a small portion already cultivated at elevations around 1400 meters.
The raw material cultivation base belongs to a subtropical monsoon climate type, with an average annual temperature of 21.3°C, annual sunshine hours of 2334.5 hours, annual rainfall of 721.51-100mm, accumulated temperature of 7800°C for temperatures greater than or equal to 10°C, and basically frost-free throughout the year. The Lujiang cultivation area has a long planting history and rich cultivation experience, with over 50 years of coffee growing history. Its yield per mu is around 150-200 kilograms. It is one of the world's renowned premium small-bean coffee production areas.
Baoshan small-bean coffee has a long cultivation history, dating back to the early 20th century. Large-scale development began in 1952, with main planting areas in the Lujiang Valley, Luoming Dam, and Pupiao regions. The varieties are mainly drought-resistant and disease-resistant Arabica species (small-bean varieties).
Baoshan small-bean coffee, a specialty product from Baoshan Lujiang in Yunnan, is a national geographical indication product and one of the higher quality coffees in China and even globally. The beans are uniform and full-bodied, with a fresh aroma, rich fragrance, mellow taste, and a characteristic of being fragrant but not strong. It can be comparable to the world-famous Blue Mountain coffee. It enjoys global renown for its unique excellent quality: in the late 1950s, it was rated as first-grade in the London market and earned the beautiful name "Lujiang No. 1". At the national coffee conference in 1980, it was recognized as "the crown of national coffee".
