FrontStreet Coffee - Pour-Over Coffee Powder to Water Ratio
Some beginners new to pour-over coffee might ask, what is 1:16? When we mention 1:16 here, we're actually referring to the powder-to-water ratio.
What is the powder-to-water ratio?
Literal explanation aside, the "powder-to-water ratio" refers to the proportion of coffee grounds to brewing water. If you have 16 grams of coffee grounds and the ratio is 1:16, you multiply by the coefficient 16, which means 16 grams of grounds requires 250 grams of water.
The range of powder-to-water ratios
When making pour-over coffee, the amount of water used significantly impacts the coffee's flavor. Different powder-to-water ratios affect the flavor, texture, and other characteristics presented by the coffee. Too little water results in an overly intense flavor (for example, a 1:10 ratio would be very stimulating and strong), with flavors clustering together without clarity; too much water makes it too bland (for example, a 1:22 pour-over would taste very weak), even tasting like water with a hint of coffee flavor.
Based on personal experience, 1:15-1:16 is an excellent choice for pour-over coffee. However, the powder-to-water ratio is not fixed but varies according to the brewing equipment used.
Typically, my pour-over ratio falls between 1:15 and 1:16.
Light to medium roast Yirgacheffe
(Powder-to-water ratio 1:15): 16 grams of Yirgacheffe beans, infused with 225ml of water. After complete filtration, you'll get approximately 190ml of coffee liquid. Typically, 16 grams of coffee grounds absorb about 32 grams of water.
The liquid obtained from a 1:15 ratio yields richer berry flavors, balanced entry, a slightly thicker body, and a black tea finish.
