FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Tanzania Coffee

Coffee growing regions in Africa - Tanzania coffee originates from the fertile soil of the East African Rift Valley, representing an outstanding example of premium coffee from this region. Its refreshing acidity and moderate body are perfectly complemented by sweet citrus and floral aromas.

Origin of Tanzania Beans

In 1898, Bourbon variety coffee was introduced to the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania by Catholic missionaries. Following this, the Kent variety was also introduced in 1920. Therefore, to this day, coffee in Tanzania remains primarily composed of Bourbon and Kent varieties.

Tanzania Coffee Characteristics

Tanzania is a typical East African country, bordering Kenya and Uganda to the north, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia to the south, and Rwanda and Burundi to the west. Many people like to compare Tanzania's coffee with its neighbor Kenya. Compared to Kenya's premium coffee beans, Tanzania coffee has less bright acidity, displaying a gentler and smoother beauty, with added sweetness and prominent red wine characteristics - another distinctive feature of Tanzanian coffee.

Geographical and Historical Context

In the northeastern part of Tanzania stands Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. After World War I, it became a trust territory under British colonial rule and gained independence in 1964. Bourbon variety coffee was first introduced for cultivation as early as 1893. Green bean processing is primarily done through the washed method. High-quality, high-altitude Tanzanian coffee, like Kenyan coffee, exhibits active and bright acidity characteristics.
