FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Colombian Coffee

Currently, Colombia is the world's largest producer of washed Arabica, the second-largest Arabica producer, and the third-largest coffee producer overall, with an annual production approximately equal to one-third of Brazil's.

However, this vast producing country is not what I imagined - with many large commercial estates forming large-scale production. Instead, 95% of Colombia consists of small farms, numerous in quantity, mostly with planting areas under 5 hectares, relying almost entirely on manual production, presenting itself in the form of small-scale farming and family trade. This has its advantages and disadvantages, but undoubtedly allows us to taste more diverse characteristics or differences.

Colombia's overall terrain is relatively flat, high in the west and low in the east. The eastern part consists of the Amazon River alluvial plain, covering two-thirds of the area; the eastern part runs parallel to three north-south trending Cordillera mountain ranges. Colombia's specialty coffee is basically grown on these mountain ranges.

The mountains rise and fall, stretching from north to south, with varied soils and overlapping rich microclimates, forming various large and small producing regions that can grow over 80 different flavor profiles of coffee. This also means that in Colombia, there are places harvesting ripe coffee fruits almost year-round.

Among them, the three specialty producing regions most recognizable to Chinese enthusiasts (Huila, Nariño, Cauca) are all located in the southern part of the mountain ranges.

The Colombian National Federation of Coffee Growers is Colombia's only official professional coffee guild, as well as a non-profit organization serving Colombian coffee farmers, and also Colombia's only official professional coffee guild. Since its establishment, it has become one of the world's largest agricultural non-governmental organizations. The Federation represents over 560,000 coffee farmer families, creating a complex infrastructure for joint representation, promoting collaboration and joint decision-making, and safeguarding the interests of coffee growers and their families.

The Federation helps Colombian coffee growers develop programs and actions for their own well-being. Due to the Federation's excellent marketing of coffee originating from Colombia, Colombian coffee has also gained worldwide reputation.
