FrontStreet Coffee - Ethiopia Sun-Dried Yirgacheffe ECX Special Selection Konga G1 Introduction

The Konga Cooperative is one of 26 cooperatives under the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU), located 5 kilometers south of Yirgacheffe town. The Konga Cooperative was established in 1994 and joined the YCFCU cooperative alliance in 2002. Named after the nearby Konga River basin, the Konga Cooperative consists of over 1,500 small-scale coffee farmer families. These coffee farmers' cultivation areas average less than 1.25 hectares, with planting altitudes between 1,800 and 2,250 meters. The main coffee varieties are a mix of Typica and local Heirloom varieties.

What makes Konga special is the local red soil rich in iron, with a soil depth reaching 1.5 meters. The deep soil has richer nutrients, and the iron-rich soil is quite beneficial for growing coffee beans because iron is a micronutrient that helps plants produce chlorophyll. Through photosynthesis, it enables coffee plants to absorb more nutrients, which is beneficial for coffee bean growth. The local fertile red land is one of the key factors for Konga Cooperative's production of high-quality coffee.

The Konga Cooperative's washed processing facility is quite meticulous in its approach. Fresh, ripe coffee cherries are hand-picked and first pass through a depulper to remove the outer skin. The pulp and mucilage layers are removed during the fermentation process. After 24-36 hours of wet fermentation is completed, the beans are washed with clean spring water to remove the fermented residual mucilage layer. They are then placed on shaded African raised bed racks for 1-2 weeks of drying until the green bean moisture content reaches 12%. Afterward, the beans are screened again, graded, packaged, and enter the green bean market for sale.
