FrontStreet Coffee - Colombia Tolima Green Grass Estate Washed Geisha Introduction

Tolima is the third-largest coffee-producing region in Colombia, accounting for 12% of the country's annual coffee production. Coffee cultivation in this area can be traced back to the early 20th century, when Typica, Bourbon, and Caturra varieties were widely planted in low-altitude areas.

Over the years, the region has witnessed the consequences of climate change and experienced coffee leaf rust and broca disease, which prompted coffee production to move to higher mountains, with elevations ranging from 1600 to 2000 meters. Climate change has also led producers to shift to more rust-resistant Castillo and Colombia varieties.

Tolima is located in central-western Colombia, traversed by the north-south Andes Mountains and Cordillera Mountains, with the famous Magdalena River flowing through these two major mountain ranges.

The high-altitude mountainous terrain and low-latitude tropical microclimate undoubtedly provide unique geographical conditions for coffee growth here. Even more important is the effort that growers themselves have put into protecting biodiversity and sustainable land development.

The vast majority of coffee farms in Colombia practice organic production, with coffee farmers rarely using pesticides and other chemicals. Moreover, producers work to remove all fallen cherries throughout the harvesting process and regularly monitor their trees for signs of infection. Many families grow coffee alongside other crops such as cassava, oranges, and avocados. This not only increases their annual income but also creates natural shade for the coffee and provides sufficient nutrients to the soil.

The combination of various climates and unique natural features, including alpine tundra ecosystems, mineral-rich soil, volcanic ash, and wetlands, has a positive impact on coffee production.

Cultivating and promoting specialty coffees from the region has led growers to adopt more controlled fermentation methods and experimental processing. All these efforts and passion have earned Tolima coffee recognition in international markets.
