FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Coffee
Guatemala is located at approximately 15 degrees latitude, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The Sierra mountain range along the Pacific side is Guatemala's main coffee-growing region. Due to the extensive mountain range and significant regional climate variations, Guatemala has developed seven distinct coffee-producing regions. Each region produces coffee with unique flavors and characteristics, with Antigua being particularly renowned worldwide for its coffee that offers mild acidity, rich and mellow flavor, and a slight volcanic carbonized taste.
The Maya Culture Heritage
Mayan culture is one of the world's important ancient civilizations and a major classical culture in the Americas. Historical records show that the Maya cultivated new food varieties that made significant contributions to humanity, including corn, tomatoes, squash, beans, sweet potatoes, chili peppers, cacao, vanilla, and tobacco, with corn cultivation being their most significant contribution. Although there are no records about coffee from that era, today, most Guatemalan coffee producers can be considered descendants of the Maya people, and they themselves appreciate being referred to as such.
Guatemala Coffee Characteristics
Guatemala coffee has a rich aroma that is enjoyable even before tasting. Antigua coffee features rich and velvety body, intense and lively fragrance, and delicate acidity. When the enticing rich aroma lingers on your palate, it contains an indescribable mystery. At the first sip, you might find it ordinary, but as the coffee gradually cools, you will discover its subtle sweetness and be surprised by its depth.
Why Antigua Coffee is Exceptional
The reason why Antigua coffee is pursued by most coffee enthusiasts is its distinctive aroma. Grown on volcanic mountains, it better retains its characteristics compared to Costa Rican coffee, mainly due to its superior geographical and climatic advantages. Guatemala is located in the tropics but has a temperate, subtropical climate due to its high altitude. Under this climate influence, coffee trees flower and bear fruit slower than coffee trees in other regions of the world. However, the mild climate combined with fertile soil creates an excellent environment for coffee cultivation.
Guatemala Coffee Varieties
Guatemala's coffee belongs to the Arabica species and is processed using the washed method. In the far northwestern region, there is the Huehuetenango highland, where coffee is grown at altitudes above 5,000 feet. This coffee exhibits the characteristics of high-altitude coffee - hard texture, strong acidity, and rich flavor, making it one of Guatemala's most distinctive coffee varieties.
