Kenya - Kenyan Coffee Introduction
In fact, Kenya's history of coffee cultivation spans only about a century. It wasn't until the 20th century that Kenyans began large-scale coffee cultivation under the guidance of British and German colonizers. Today, Kenya's coffee production units consist mainly of small plantations with an average area of only half an acre.
Although Kenya produces 49,980 metric tons of coffee beans annually, with yields far smaller than global leaders, Kenyan coffee beans have numerous followers in the specialty coffee industry. Currently, most exports go to developed countries in Europe and Asia, with buyers being world-class quality purchasers.

Altitude: 1,500-1,900 meters
Varieties: Ruiru 11, Batian, SL-28, SL-34
This small growing region in western Kenya has begun to develop in recent years. Mount Elgon provides significant altitude, with most coffee coming from estates. Coffee cultivation typically aims to diversify farms that previously only grew corn or dairy products.
Flavor Characteristics
Generally, Kenyan coffee has a unique bright acidity with flavors of blackcurrant, grapefruit or lime, tomato or tamarind, and tropical fruits like pineapple. The common SL-28 and SL-34 varieties are often juicy and vibrant, while the French Mission Bourbon variety tends to showcase more creamy and lemon flavors.
Different regions also exhibit flavor variations. Coffee from Nyeri County often contains more fructose, juicy mouthfeel, and strong acidity. Coffee from Embu County typically has more brown sugar notes and is overall more balanced. Coffee from Kirinyaga features more floral notes, with more refined quality and complexity.
