FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Ethiopian Coffee

The coffee tree is a tropical plant that grows in warm regions. The coffee belt refers to the areas where coffee beans are cultivated, named so because they form a belt-like shape. This coffee belt lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, specifically between 25 degrees south latitude and 25 degrees north latitude.

Ethiopia: The Birthplace of Coffee

Ethiopia is known as the "birthplace of coffee," as it is believed that coffee originated in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has nine major coffee-producing regions: Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, Harrar, Limu, Illubabor, Gimbi, Jimma, Tepi, and Bebeka.

Most Common Varieties on the Market

[Sidamo]

Berry acidity, rich tropical fruit aroma, with distinct lemon and citrus notes.

Sidamo, with an elevation of 1400-2200 meters, is a renowned specialty coffee region in southern Ethiopia, near Kenya. The area features diverse topography with towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys, and plains. The geology consists of fertile, well-drained volcanic soil with depths of nearly 2 meters, with surface soil appearing dark brown or brown. The region's greatest advantage lies in maintaining soil fertility through organic matter recycling, using fallen leaves from surrounding trees or plant residues as fertilizer.

[Yirgacheffe]

Unique jasmine fragrance, with citrus and lemon flavors, and honey-like sweetness.

Yirgacheffe is a small town in Sidamo with an elevation of 700-2100 meters, synonymous with Ethiopian specialty coffee. The coffee production methods and flavors here are unique, so it has been separated as a distinct region.
