FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
The prestigious status and excellent reputation of Blue Mountain coffee stem from its exceptional quality. The finest Blue Mountain coffee must originate from Jamaica's Blue Mountains, known as the black pearl of the Caribbean. Jamaica's island features numerous peaks exceeding 1,500 meters in elevation, with the Blue Mountains situated in the central region at 2,256 meters above sea level - the Caribbean's highest peak. Located within the coffee belt, this area experiences year-round fog and rainfall, boasting the fertile volcanic soil, humid climate, and pollution-free fresh air that coffee trees thrive upon...
It is in such fertile land that the world-renowned Blue Mountain coffee is cultivated. Jamaica's Blue Mountains represent the highest peaks in the western Caribbean, reaching 2,256 meters in elevation. Primarily composed of fertile volcanic soil, with abundant rainfall, ideal temperature, and perfect sunlight - all conditions exceptionally suitable for coffee tree growth, resulting in Blue Mountain coffee's outstanding quality.
Such superior cultivation conditions naturally provide unparalleled advantages, but there's another crucial factor that cannot be overlooked: the Jamaican government's stringent quality control over Blue Mountain coffee. Jamaica began coffee cultivation as early as 1717, with promotion of Arabica planting in the St. Andrew region beginning in the mid-1920s - now one of Jamaica's three major Blue Mountain coffee producing regions, alongside Portland and St. Thomas.
In 1950, the Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board, which sets quality standards for Jamaican coffee and supervises their implementation to ensure quality. The board also grants special official seals to Jamaica's exported green and roasted coffee beans, representing one of the world's highest-level national coffee institutions. These strict standards indeed guarantee the excellent quality of Jamaican coffee, but it was the Japanese who truly opened the market for Blue Mountain coffee, establishing it as a symbol of premium coffee.
Due to historical reasons (which will be discussed later), Japan's UCC Corporation purchases the majority of these beans, maintaining consistently high prices (relatively speaking).
Blue Mountain coffee embodies all the desirable qualities of coffee: full-bodied coffee beans, rich and elegant aroma, perfectly balanced flavor profile, and a long-lasting, memorable aftertaste.
