FrontStreet Coffee - Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Introduction
Blue Mountain coffee originates from Jamaica, named after the Blue Mountains surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. Its acidity, sweetness, and bitterness are perfectly balanced, with excellent flavor and aroma. It's suitable for single-origin coffee and is best when medium-roasted. Blue Mountain coffee is one of the world's most superior coffees, with Jamaica's weather, geological structure, and topography jointly providing the ideal environment.
It's important to note that 99.9% of Blue Mountain coffee available in China today is merely grown near the Blue Mountains. Only coffee produced from the 6,000 hectares of land above 1,600 meters altitude can be called Blue Mountain. A pound of top-grade Blue Mountain coffee is worth thousands of yuan.
Jamaica has a tropical rainforest climate with abundant rainfall year-round and an average annual temperature of 27 degrees Celsius.
There is a mountain range extending across eastern Jamaica, known as the Blue Mountains. Stretching from Stony Hill in the west to the Caribbean coast in the east, it spans about 50 kilometers and features many peaks over 1,500 meters above sea level. The Blue Mountain peak in the central section reaches 2,256 meters, making it the highest point in the country. This area enjoys a pleasant climate and beautiful scenery, making it a famous tourist destination.
However, what brought this region worldwide fame is the cultivation of the world-renowned Blue Mountain coffee. Blue Mountain coffee refers to coffee beans produced in Jamaica's Blue Mountains. The unique environment of the Blue Mountains has created the renowned Blue Mountain coffee. Coffee trees require mild but not excessively hot temperature conditions, with about two hours of daily sunlight. Excessive heat causes coffee berries to develop too quickly, preventing them from producing small, dense, high-quality coffee beans.
For this reason, places suitable for coffee tree cultivation are mostly countries with mountainous terrain located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, known as the Coffee Zone or Coffee Belt. Fertile volcanic soil becomes excellent fertilizer, while the dense fog lingering in the mountains provides natural shade for the coffee trees. Abundant rainfall, suitable temperatures, and unique natural conditions contribute to the delicious taste of Blue Mountain coffee. There is no other place in the world with such ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.
Legend has it that Jamaica's coffee was introduced by a French naval officer in 1723 from nearby regions. However, the cultivation of this crop initially did not receive sufficient attention. In 1932, the Jamaican authorities made an important decision: to encourage coffee cultivation to reduce dependence on sugar exports. From then on, Blue Mountain coffee gradually gained prominence.
