FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee
When it comes to Jamaica, everyone will definitely think of Blue Mountain Coffee (Jamaica Blue Mountain), and indeed, Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee has become synonymous with Jamaica.
We absolutely believe that Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is the best coffee. Its acidity, sweetness, richness, and bitterness are perfectly balanced, with a fragrant aroma that feels incredibly smooth to drink. However, its price is too high. While worth trying, there's no need to be obsessed with it.
Because other selected coffees also have their own characteristics, taste delicious, and are reasonably priced, these are truly good coffees for our daily lives.
In 1717, French King Louis XV ordered coffee to be planted in Jamaica.
In the mid-1720s, Jamaica's Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes imported Arabica seeds from Martinique and began promoting cultivation in the St. Andrew area.
In 1932, coffee production reached its peak, with coffee harvests exceeding 15,000 tons.
In 1950, the Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board.
In 1969, the situation improved as Japanese loans were utilized to enhance production quality, thereby securing the market. Today, this coffee has reached a status of enthusiastic admiration.
Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is one of the world's famous island coffees. The Jamaica Blue Mountain variety is Typica. Typica is very susceptible to leaf rust disease. Originally, Typica widely planted in Central and South America was continuously replaced due to the proliferation of leaf rust, but because of Jamaica's unique geographical advantages, Typica remains the main cultivated variety here, with a very low incidence of leaf rust disease.
Because Jamaica is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea, Blue Mountain Coffee does not have the advantage of high altitude in cultivation, so it lacks the pleasant, bright acidity of high-altitude Central American coffees. Mild with low acidity is its characteristic, despite Blue Mountain's soil also being volcanic rock soil. Because the cultivation altitude is not high, the body of Blue Mountain Coffee is medium. We should not describe Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee as full-bodied, but rather as having a gentle richness.
