FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Dominican Coffee
The Dominican Republic has also experienced various periods of turmoil and poverty in its history. In 1844, the Dominican Republic separated from Haitian rule and officially declared independence. In 1865, it repelled the Spanish invasion. The country now implements democratic elections, but has not yet formally established diplomatic relations with China, instead maintaining so-called "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan. While these facts may seem unrelated to coffee, they actually have an impact. Exchanges between countries without diplomatic relations face many restrictions in various aspects, which of course also affects our coffee trade.
Due to their superior quality, Dominican coffees are primarily exported to the United States, with many European countries also importing them. They are rarely seen in mainland China.
The earliest coffee in the Dominican Republic was introduced from Martinique (a French overseas department), tracing back to the early 18th century. In the 1720s, coffee from Martinique was planted in mountainous regions around 1,000 meters above sea level, mainly distributed across five areas: the northern mountains, central mountains, southern region, southeastern region, and eastern region. The best production areas are the Barahona region in the southwest and the Cibao valley north of Santiago, the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic.
However, Juncalito and Ocoa also produce a premium coffee—Santo Domingo coffee. Among these, coffees produced in Santo Domingo and Baní are world-renowned and have become almost synonymous with Dominican coffee. Their characteristics are refreshing and elegant, with full-bodied beans, excellent acidity, and pleasant aroma.
Dominican coffee has two main characteristics that vary depending on the production region and variety. The Typica coffee produced in the main production area of Barahona possesses the characteristic soft mouthfeel and light aroma of the Caribbean; while the highland coffee from the Cibao region in the central mountains has a rich flavor—each production area has its own distinctive features.
In the Cibao region, there are many large-scale estates where coffee tree varieties consist of 75% Caturra combined with 25% Typica. In terms of varieties, Barahona is a region with a higher proportion of Typica cultivation.
