FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Cacisero

Guatemala was one of the ancient Mayan cultural centers. In the Maya-Toltec language, Guatemala means "land of dense forests." Two-thirds of the country's territory consists of highlands. High altitude, mild climate, abundant sunshine, cool nighttime temperatures, and periodic rainy seasons provide excellent natural conditions for Guatemala's coffee cultivation. Additionally, Guatemala has numerous active volcanoes, and its fertile soil enables the region to produce world-class coffee.

Guatemala's official languages are Spanish and 23 native languages including Mayan. In 1523, Spaniards arrived in Guatemala, destroying the local Mayan culture and beginning colonial rule. During this period, destructive policies led to the destruction of most Mayan books, with only a small portion surviving.

Meanwhile, in 1524, Guatemala became completely colonized by Spain. Antigua was the capital during the Spanish colonial period in 1543. Despite being situated in a valley surrounded by layers of active volcanoes, the mysterious, vast, and extremely fertile land still tempted the Spaniards to establish their capital in this cliff valley. Later, this place was instantly engulfed by volcanic eruption. After the disaster, it became managed by indigenous people, who grew world-renowned coffee in this resilient and hardworking land.

The lush Antigua Valley of Guatemala is situated at nearly one mile above sea level (1 mile = 1,609.344 meters), making it a paradise for coffee growth for Guatemala Cacisero.

(The Spanish meaning of Cacisero is "like a paradise")

Guatemala Cacisero combines coffee beans from four Antigua farms, surrounded by three volcanoes (Agua, Acatenango, and Fuego). Located between three volcanoes, Guatemala has consistently produced some of the best coffee in the country, maintaining a strong tradition of coffee horticulture. Two of the local farm facilities were funded by Starbucks. Guatemala Cacisero coffee beans are the result of collaboration between Starbucks and several chefs from a renowned Seattle restaurant.
