FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to African Coffee Origins
Geographically, the coffee belt is mainly distributed across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Coffee characteristics from each continent differ. For example, African coffee is known for its unique floral and fruity notes.
As commonly perceived, Africa has higher temperatures and less precipitation. Therefore, coffee beans from this region are predominantly processed using the natural (dry) method. Since the natural method involves direct sun exposure in open fields, there may be some impurities such as grains, small stones, or insects. The resulting beans have a relatively higher defect rate, but African coffee possesses distinctive characteristics with prominent fruit acidity and rich aromas. This is what we see in official materials or what is generally communicated externally.
I would like to share a thought with everyone: after getting coffee beans, try to recreate the flavors described in their profiles. However, there may be some discrepancies between these descriptions and what we actually taste. This gap might be due to personal preferences, or there may be differences between what our noses detect or what we taste versus the information officially released.
Ethiopia
Like Kenya, Ethiopia is a well-known and important coffee-producing country in Africa. The most famous beans produced include Mocha Harar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe, which is most popular domestically. Its main coffee regions include Jimma and Sidamo in the west, and Harar in the east - these are Ethiopia's three major producing regions. Compared to other African countries that produce coffee, the acidity of Ethiopian coffee is relatively refreshing in terms of fruit acidity.
Yirgacheffe is a sub-region of the Sidamo area, situated at an altitude of 1,700-2,100 meters, making it one of the highest-altitude coffee-producing regions globally. Due to its unique flavor profile, it has been separated as a distinct region. Besides the town of Yirgacheffe, it includes three surrounding sub-regions: Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena/Abaya. Therefore, in the new Yirgacheffe grading system, Yirgacheffe A, Wenago A, Kochere A, and Gelena/Abaya A are more expensive than their B-grade counterparts. Besides washed and natural processing, semi-washed Yirgacheffe has recently been introduced and is worth trying.
