FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Three Major Coffee Origins
As baristas, we often encounter situations at work where a customer walks in, looks at the extensive menu of coffees, doesn't know how to choose, and asks the barista: "What's the best coffee you have here?"
Every time, I explain to customers that all coffee is good coffee—it mainly depends on your personal preferences. The flavors and textures you love are the best for you. Therefore, I always communicate with customers to understand their preferences in order to better recommend coffees that will satisfy them.
Central and South America
Characteristics: Balanced acidity, sweetness, and bitterness; mellow and smooth
Central and South America is the world's largest coffee-producing region, with countless specialty coffees that can be dazzling in their excellence. Coffees from this region are processed using various methods such as washed processing, natural processing, and honey processing. The overall flavor profile is known for its balance, and proper processing also results in more uniform bean shapes and lower defect rates.
Africa
Characteristics: Wild, direct, lively, and vibrant; rich aroma; bright fruit acidity
Africa is the birthplace of coffee and holds a very important position in the entire coffee industry. Ethiopia, in particular, is known as the genetic treasure house of coffee.
Asia
Characteristics: Full-bodied, rich, deep, and subtle
