FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Puerto Rican Coffee
Puerto Rico has a history of coffee production spanning nearly three centuries and was once one of the world's largest coffee-producing regions. According to Starbucks' website, in 1736, Spanish explorers brought coffee from French King Louis XIV's plantation to the island. The reputation of Yaucono Selecto was once comparable to Hawaii's Kona and Jamaica's Blue Mountain, making it a favorite of European royal courts and the Vatican. Until the nineteenth century, cafés in Vienna, Paris, and Madrid considered it their exclusive choice.
However, today, Puerto Rican coffee is rarely seen or heard of outside the island. Even its major shareholder, Coca-Cola, does not actively promote it. Instead, they blend coffee from Puerto Rico with coffees from Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic, roasting them together without specifying the origin.
Located in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico boasts picturesque landscapes and pleasant year-round climate. With beaches, historical sites, vast forests, as well as soil and rainfall suitable for growing high-quality coffee, its natural conditions are exceptionally advantageous. Puerto Rican coffee, known as "the king's coffee," has long been favored by European royalty and nobility. It was designated as the official coffee of the Holy See and is recognized by international coffee judges as the third-ranked coffee in the world.
The most famous Puerto Rican coffees are "Yauco" and "Lares," with Yauco being the exceptional among premium varieties. Yauco Selecto coffee is grown on three farms in southwestern Puerto Rico, where the mountainous climate is mild, allowing plants a longer maturation period. The soil quality is excellent clay, and ancient coffee tree varieties are cultivated. Although production is lower than other varieties, the quality is consistently superior, creating a captivating coffee that offers complete flavor profiles without bitterness, rich in nutrients and intense fruit notes.
Yauco Selecto beans possess an intense aromatic flavor with a long-lasting aftertaste, featuring natural milk aroma and smooth texture. Even when consumed as pure black coffee, it might be mistaken for coffee with milk added.
