FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Ethiopian Coffee

The world of coffee is rich and fascinating. Coffee from different continents shares some commonalities while maintaining unique characteristics. Coffee is produced between the equator and 15 degrees north latitude, so South America, Asia, and Africa all produce it. However, coffee grown between the equator and 15 degrees north latitude tends to be too strong and bitter, appealing mainly to those who drink coffee without truly appreciating its flavor. In fact, the best coffee should be produced between 15 degrees north latitude and the Tropic of Cancer.

The highlands of Ethiopia are the birthplace of coffee. In the vicinity of the eastern ancient capital Harrar, at an altitude of about 2,000 meters, traditional dry processing methods are still used to produce Mocha-Harrar beans. Harrar has a medium body with rich, wine-like fruity flavors, and fine Harrar exhibits a wildness comparable to the finest Yemen Mocha.

The exceptional varieties are produced in a smaller, higher-altitude area within Sidamo, known as Yirgacheffe. Its rich flavors sweep across the palate, leaving endless aftertaste, while its subtle acidity flows within a full body, reminiscent of Sumatran coffee. Additionally, it features unique, delicate floral notes, truly earning its reputation as a coffee that stands alone globally.

Ethiopia is an agricultural country with the history and tradition of being considered the origin of coffee. The southwestern region of Kaffa is regarded as the place that gave rise to the name "coffee," while the southern Sidamo region is the main producing area, with Yirgacheffe being one of the production areas in southern Sidamo. The eastern highland region of Harrar is also famous, sharing its name with the "Harrar" coffee variety.

Ethiopia is an important coffee-producing country, with approximately 12 million people engaged in coffee production, making it a major exporter of Arabica coffee beans in Africa. The premium coffee here is of exceptional quality and worth seeking. It features a smooth mouthfeel, wild wine-like aromas, and slight acidity, leaving an unforgettable impression after tasting.
