One of Asia's Coffee Regions: Yunnan - More Than Just Tea
FrontStreet Coffee - Yunnan Coffee Introduction
Yunnan's unique natural conditions have allowed coffee, an exotic product, to survive and develop, becoming the birthplace of coffee cultivation in mainland China.
According to historical records, in the early 20th century, a French missionary brought the first coffee seedlings to Binchuan County, Yunnan for cultivation; after the mid-1950s, Yunnan began large-scale cultivation; currently, Yunnan has become the veritable number one coffee province in China.
The main coffee variety in Yunnan is Arabica, the so-called small-grain coffee, commonly known as Yunnan small-grain coffee domestically. Yunnan coffee has been evaluated by world coffee experts as the best-tasting coffee - rich but not bitter, fragrant but not strong, with a hint of fruitiness. Its unique flavor has attracted many fans.
Yunnan small-grain coffee is named in contrast to Vietnam's medium-grain coffee, which is due to different cultivation varieties. Yunnan's cultivated variety is Arabica, with smaller beans compared to the Robusta variety grown in Vietnam, hence the name "small-grain."
The size of coffee beans depends on the variety, cultivation latitude, humidity, altitude, and other factors. Due to differences in these factors, coffee flavors vary - some tend toward bitterness with light aroma, others have strong aroma with light bitterness, some are mellow, some have sufficient fruit acidity, etc. Because coffee drinking habits and coffee cultures vary worldwide, different coffee varieties with different flavors are chosen.
Due to its unique geographical environment and climatic conditions, Yunnan coffee has formed a distinctive flavor profile that is rich but not bitter, fragrant but not strong, with a hint of fruitiness. World-class coffee experts have evaluated it as the best coffee in the world, and its cultivation techniques and yield per unit are also world-class.
Coffee contains abundant protein, fat, sucrose, starch, caffeine, and other substances. When made into a beverage, it has rich aroma, pleasant taste, and rich nutrition, making it one of the world's three major beverages along with tea and cocoa, ranking at the top. Yunnan coffee belongs to a variant of the Arabica original species, formed through long-term cultivation and domestication, with over a hundred years of cultivation history.
The main cultivation areas are distributed in Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Dehong, and other regions. The Lujiangba area in Baoshan has an average temperature of 21.5°C, with a maximum of 40.4°C, and is basically frost-free year-round, making it a recognized prime location for small-grain coffee cultivation.
