FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Chinese Coffee Growing Regions
In 1892, French missionary Father Tian cultivated the first coffee tree outside the church with coffee fruits for his own coffee needs. Since then, coffee cultivation began in Zhukula Village, Yunnan. To this day, there are still 24 coffee trees over 90 years old growing in Zhukula Township, Yunnan.
Although Zhukula is poor and backward, it is a place with an indissoluble bond with coffee. In addition to growing coffee throughout the village, the villagers all have a tradition of drinking coffee: self-grown, self-ground, and self-brewed. Now, regardless of gender or age, everyone in the village has a habit of drinking coffee.
Zhukula Village serves guests with local coffee and walnuts. The coffee brewed in earthen jars may not taste the best, but this primitive way of drinking reflects the Zhukula villagers' love for coffee and is also the highest ceremonial reception for guests. The unique and rich original coffee culture makes everyone who knows Zhukula sigh in admiration. This place is truly worthy of being called China's first coffee village.
Yunnan small-grain coffee bears fruit in 3-4 years.
The small-grain coffee variety in Yunnan flowers from February to July, with the peak flowering period from March to May. Coffee flowering is greatly influenced by climate, especially rainfall and temperature. Coffee flowers have a short lifespan, lasting only 2-3 days. Small-grain coffee generally begins to open between 3-5 AM and fully blooms between 5-7 AM. Coffee fruit development takes a long time. Small-grain coffee fruit requires 8-10 months to mature, typically ripening from October to December of the same year.
Small-grain coffee is suitable for growing on mountainous land at altitudes of 800-1800 meters. If the altitude is too high, the taste becomes sour; if too low, it becomes bitter. Most small-grain coffee is planted in the dry-hot valley regions at around 1100 meters altitude, resulting in moderate acidity, rich aroma, and mellow flavor. Many areas in Yunnan have unique environments suitable for growing small-grain coffee, producing excellent quality small-grain coffee. The average temperature in Baoshan Lujiangba is 21.5°C, with a maximum of 40.4°C, and it is basically frost-free throughout the year, making it a recognized optimal growing region for small-grain coffee. The small-grain coffee cultivated here is famous at home and abroad for being strong without bitterness, aromatic without harshness, with small and uniform grains, rich mellow aroma, and fruity notes.
