As we know, typically one coffee cherry contains two flat beans nestled closely together, supporting each other as they grow. However, occasionally there's a phenomenon where one bean occupies the entire fruit. These beans, destined for solitude, are what we call peaberries. Approximately 5-10% of the seeds in coffee fruits from each coffee tree are peaberries. They are usually smaller than flat beans, but with their naturally chubby appearance, they look like adorable little round balls.

Peaberries have limited production. During coffee processing, they typically require manual labor to distinguish and screen these round beans from others, making them relatively rare.

For example, in Kenya, after raw bean processing is complete, coffee beans with parchment are sent to large coffee mills for hulling, which is done just before export or delivery. After hulling, screening and grading take place, giving us the grades we see like AA and AB. Among these, peaberries are specifically selected and sold separately, known as Kenya PB, short for Peaberry. With bright plum acidity and rich cherry tomato flavors, they taste remarkably similar to semi-dry sweet white wine.

Currently, peaberry beans on the market include famous examples like Kona coffee beans, where about 5% of Kona coffee beans grown in Hawaii have peaberry形态. Additionally, in Tanzania Peaberry coffee, about 5-10% of fruits also develop peaberry形态, and these beans are particularly small.

In fact, whether peaberries actually taste better remains inconclusive. This is because different coffee bean varieties produce peaberry beans with distinct flavors. Furthermore, factors that create peaberry形态 might be influenced by human intervention, making the pricing of peaberry beans questionable.
