FrontStreet Coffee - Yirgacheffe·Gedeb
In the world of coffee, Ethiopia is not only the birthplace of coffee but also renowned for its high-quality coffee beans. For example, the Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Guji regions all produce many premium coffees.
Honestly, I quite enjoy drinking coffee from the Yirgacheffe region. Every time I go to a coffee shop, Yirgacheffe is always my first choice. Recently, a coffee from the Gedeb Cooperative in the Yirgacheffe region has always remained on my favorites list.
The Gedeb Cooperative is located in the Gedeo Zone, south of the Gedeb area in the Yirgacheffe region. The Gedeb Cooperative is affiliated with YCFCU (Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union). Originally part of the Woka Cooperative, it became independent in 2012 and evolved into today's Gedeb Cooperative. The Gedeb Cooperative has 270 farmers growing coffee on 504 hectares of land. The Gedeb Cooperative also holds Fair Trade certification and organic farming certification.
The coffee from the Gedeb Cooperative is grown at altitudes between 1900 and 2100 meters, with Heirloom varieties, and the harvest period is from December to January of the following year. Most of the Gedeo Zone, where the Gedeb Cooperative is located, receives abundant rainfall during summer, with daytime temperatures between 21°C and 29°C, and nighttime temperatures between 9.8°C and 17°C.
The Gedeb Cooperative is currently managed by the Roba family, with current operations managers Kefyalew, Bekele, and Tesfaye. All three studied fields such as forestry, geography, population, environmental development, and management during their school years, which is a significant technical advantage for the Gedeb Cooperative.
The Roba family of the Gedeb Cooperative believes that biodiversity contributes to sustainable environmental development, so the Gedeb Cooperative adopts an agroforestry planting model, growing many grain and fruit crops in addition to coffee.
During cupping, we experienced honey peach and sweet orange aromas in the dry fragrance, accompanied by subtle white floral notes; when cupping, the coffee presented fresh strawberry and lychee flavors, citrus-like bright acidity, and sucrose sweetness, with a medium body similar to yogurt, and a delicate, long-lasting floral aftertaste.
