FrontStreet Coffee - Washed Yirgacheffe G1·Singlenut Small Farmer Introduction
YCFCU Cooperative Introduction
The coffee harvested and processed by YCFCU's small farmers faces extraordinarily challenging transportation. First, after coffee beans are harvested from the small farmers' own plots, they must undergo preliminary screening, then be concentrated at receiving stations established by village cooperatives. After recording, screening, and weighing, they are transported to nearby small water treatment stations. Here, after washing, the pulp and fruit skin are removed, then washed again before entering fermentation tanks for about 36 hours of fermentation. Afterwards, they are washed again and naturally sun-dried. Throughout this process, cooperative members work closely together. During harvest periods, entire families must mobilize. Since each small farmer averages only 0.5 hectares of land, harvest volumes are not large, and they must engage in other farming or animal husbandry to make a living. However, coffee may be one of their rare sources of cash income, showing the importance of coffee income to these farmers.
This small-scale farming model is quite common in Ethiopia and belongs to "Garden plant" cultivation - essentially garden-style growing that looks like it's planted in one's own courtyard! After being sent to receiving stations and screened to remove defective beans, quantities are recorded, then sent to washing stations for further processing. Following this sequence, after natural sun-drying reaches the specified moisture content, they are sent to YCFCU's dry processing plant. At YCFCU, the hard shells are removed and grading is performed, all under the quality inspection of cooperative quality control personnel. Currently, YC has a dedicated quality control officer stationed in this region, overseeing production area cooperatives and harvest processing conditions... Finally, they are concentrated at cooperative regional warehouses and transported to the capital for inspection, awaiting grading, dehulling, final screening, and export!
YCFCU bags occasionally feature special "hand picked" markings, indicating hand-picking and hand-selection. According to YCFCU, these coffees are all harvested by small farmers who personally pick ripe red coffee cherries and, after a series of careful processing, send them to cooperative processing plants. After removing the parchment skin, the cooperative's women work hard to screen and select only high-quality green beans for bagging and export. These processes differ from the hired harvesting methods of large coffee plantations or contracted estates. On the other hand, it also lets overseas buyers know their dedication to nearly entirely manual selection!
