FrontStreet Coffee's Introduction to Yirgacheffe
There are more than 1,500 varieties of coffee beans in the world, almost all distributed between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. For those who haven't yet fallen in love with coffee, no matter how many varieties exist, it's all just one thing—coffee, and they may not even know what real coffee beans are.
For coffee lovers, this question becomes much more interesting. Each variety of bean has its own appearance and character, with each one possessing its own unique charm.
Ethiopia is the largest coffee-producing country in Africa, with an annual production of Arabica beans exceeding 400,000 tons in 2018. Some of the most well-known coffees include:
Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, and Limu—numerous varieties, rich fruit aromas, and legendary stories. No other coffee-producing country in the world can compare to Ethiopia.
There's a story that everyone must be familiar with: in the Old Testament's Book of Genesis, Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden by God for eating the "forbidden fruit" from the "Tree of Knowledge."
To this day, academic circles continue to debate what exactly the "forbidden fruit" was, with arguments ranging from grapes to apples. However, one theory has gained widespread acceptance—they believe the "Tree of Knowledge" was actually the coffee tree, and the "forbidden fruit" was the coffee cherry.
Many newcomers to specialty coffee have a misunderstanding about Yirgacheffe, thinking that Yirgacheffe and Sidamo are two different growing regions. In reality, Yirgacheffe is a coffee town located in the Sidamo region of Ethiopia, situated at an altitude of 1,700-2,100 meters. Because the coffee produced in this area has exceptionally prominent and distinctive floral and citrus flavors, it was later specially approved by the Ethiopian government to exist as an "independent entity," quickly becoming the most renowned growing region in all of Africa.
Jasmine floral notes, citrus, lemon, peach, almond, and tea aromas are the most influential characteristics of Yirgacheffe coffee.
