FrontStreet Coffee - Catuai Variety Introduction

Bourbon varieties include: Pacamara, Caturra, Catuai, and Sarchimor. Today, let's explore Catuai.

Catuai

The variety name Catuai comes from an indigenous language, meaning "very good." Catuai is a dwarf coffee tree hybrid produced in Brazil in 1950 from Yellow Caturra and Mundo Novo.

After its official release in the 1970s, it was promoted to Central American countries and widely cultivated in Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, as well as its country of origin, Brazil.

Catuai has good resistance to natural disasters, especially wind and rain. It inherits the advantage of Caturra's low stature, addressing the shortcomings of Mundo Novo. Another advantage is its firm fruit, which doesn't fall easily in strong winds, compensating for the delicate nature of Arabica fruits. However, its overall flavor profile is more monotonous than Caturra and lacks the body of Mundo Novo, which is its greatest regret. Additionally, its fruit growth and harvesting lifespan is only about ten years, making its short lifespan another weakness. It is favored in regions with high wind and rainfall. Furthermore, it requires adequate fertilization and care.

Catuai was introduced to Honduras in 1979 and officially released commercially in 1989. It was widely welcomed by farmers and today accounts for more than half of all production in Honduras! Due to Catuai's dwarf plants, they can be densely planted, and the flavor is also excellent at altitudes above 1,300 meters. The only drawback is its susceptibility to pests and diseases.

Catuai can adapt well to various altitudes. When planted above 800m, considering flavor alone, under appropriate terroir conditions and processing methods, Catuai can produce quite wonderful flavors.

Catuai is widely cultivated in extensive Central and South American producing regions, including Brazil. Catuai also comes in red and yellow fruit varieties, with the red fruit variety winning awards more frequently than the yellow one. Catuai, Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon are the four main coffee varieties in Brazil. This time, we bring you a Catuai variety coffee bean from the Elida Estate in Panama.
