Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Pink Bourbon Coffee
Bourbon coffee was originally cultivated on Bourbon Island (now known as Réunion Island), located approximately 650km east of the famous Madagascar Island.
The Bourbon variety ranks alongside Typica as one of the oldest and finest existing coffee varieties.
Tracing back to its origins, Bourbon and Typica actually share the same lineage; the earliest Typica transplanted to Bourbon Island underwent several generations of natural reproduction, where genetic mutations occurred in the tree species. Whether in terms of vitality, disease resistance, tree appearance, or cupping flavor, there were significant improvements compared to the original Typica variety. Later, this new variety was named after the island, becoming the Bourbon variety.
Bourbon coffee originates from the natural mutation of the Typica coffee variety and is also a variety with a long history, with both varieties belonging to the Arabica species. Typical Bourbon coffee mainly consists of green fruits that mature into bright red fruits, which is what we know as Red Bourbon. The fruits are relatively short and round, also called Round Bourbon, with high density in both flesh and seeds, featuring high sweetness and bright acidity.
However, besides Red Bourbon, there are actually Yellow Bourbon, the rare Orange Bourbon, and the precious Pink Bourbon.
Pink Bourbon is a natural hybrid of Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon. Among them, Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon coffees belong to "dominant traits" expressed by "dominant genes," with relatively strong reproductive stability. The new variety Pink Bourbon, resulting from their hybridization, belongs to "recessive traits" expressed by "recessive genes," and the offspring produced by hybrid reproduction are prone to trait segregation.
Furthermore, coffee trees rely on pollen for sexual reproduction, and other tree species with dominant traits can easily pollinate Pink Bourbon, seriously affecting the flowering and fruiting of the next season. This is the main reason why Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon are more common, while Pink Bourbon is rarely seen.
