FrontStreet Coffee - Bourbon Coffee Introduction

Bourbon

The name Bourbon comes from its original planting place, Bourbon Island, which is the French Réunion Island. During the French colonial period, the French exported this coffee overseas, primarily to North America. Bourbon coffee cherries are short and round, with high density in both pulp and seeds. Bourbon coffee typically has high sweetness and bright acidity. The yield of this coffee variety is 20-30% higher than Typica, but it is still considered a low-yield variety and is equally susceptible to leaf rust disease. Most Bourbon coffee cherries are red, but there are two natural variants that display different colors: Orange Bourbon and Yellow Bourbon. Orange Bourbon has a richer sweetness, while the most recognizable Yellow Bourbon has higher acidity, and Pink Bourbon has recently become a new favorite.

Bourbon is a coffee variety, belonging to the Arabica coffee bean family. It is a sub-variety resulting from a mutation of Typica and belongs to the same category as Typica, making both among the most ancient coffee varieties today. The name "Bourbon" comes from a place name - a French overseas department, an island in the Indian Ocean, which is how Bourbon coffee got its name. Today, this island is no longer called "Bourbon" but has been renamed Réunion Island, yet the coffee name continues to be used to this day.

Among the many coffee varieties in Brazil, Yellow Bourbon is one of the most outstanding quality variants. While typical Bourbon cherries turn from green to yellow and then to red, Yellow Bourbon maintains its yellow appearance, looking very appealing. This makes it an important branch of Brazilian specialty coffee.

Although many people say that while Brazilian coffee production is massive, the quality is quite average, suitable only for canned beans or as a base for commercial blends, Brazil has increasingly focused on cultivating specialty beans in recent years. High-quality specialty Yellow Bourbon has emerged as a result. In recent cupping competitions, Yellow Bourbon has continuously achieved impressive results.

Brazilian Yellow Bourbon is renowned for its sweetness. It is highly suitable whether used for pour-over single origins or in espresso blends, especially in espresso blends where it can add delightful sweetness and pleasant aftertaste to the coffee.
