FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Coffee Bean Origins
There are actually many legends about coffee. One of the most widely accepted is that the world's first coffee tree was discovered in the Horn of Africa.
At that time, indigenous African tribes often ground coffee berries and mixed them with animal fat, kneading them into many spherical pills. These indigenous tribes regarded these coffee pills as precious food, exclusively enjoyed by warriors about to go to war.
At that time, people didn't understand why coffee consumers showed excitement - they didn't know this was caused by the stimulating effects of coffee. Instead, people regarded it as religious fanaticism displayed by coffee consumers. They felt this beverage was very mysterious and was often bestowed by shamans in the tribe.
Subsequently, after being introduced from Africa to the Arabian region, it became popular to brew dried coffee beans into a soup and use it as a stomach medicine. Gradually, followers began using coffee as an alternative to alcoholic beverages as a stimulating drink. With the Islamic holy city of Mecca as the center, this beverage spread through the travels of believers, from Arabia to Egypt, then to Syria, Iran, Turkey, and other places.
After the 13th century, Arabs already knew how to dry raw coffee beans, roast them, pound them with a mortar and pestle, and then boil them with water to obtain purer quality coffee. As for shops that sold coffee as a business, legend has it that they started in the Islamic holy city of "Mecca." Around the 17th century, with the arrival of the "Age of Great Navigation," Italian Venice merchant caravans often came to the Arabian region to import textiles and tea, gradually becoming accustomed to this beverage called coffee. Coffee then gradually became popular in Italy, India, Britain, and other places through trade routes.
Around 1650, the first coffee shop in Western Europe, filled with the aroma of coffee all day, appeared in Oxford, England... With the arrival of the colonial era, coffee followed the footsteps of the "empire on which the sun never sets" and went global, becoming the most popular of the three major beverages in the world today.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the main producers of Arabica coffee in Africa, producing the world's best Arabica coffee. Ethiopia's geographical environment is very suitable for coffee growth.
Coffee is mainly planted on the southern highlands at altitudes between 1,100 and 2,300 meters. The soil in these areas is well-drained, slightly acidic, red, and loose. Currently, about 25% of Ethiopia's population directly or indirectly relies on coffee production for their livelihood. The majority are farmers who use traditional cultivation methods. They manually care for coffee trees, use organic fertilizers, and do not use harmful pesticides and herbicides. Therefore, most coffee produced in Ethiopia is organic coffee.
