FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Brazilian Cerrado Coffee

The Cerrado growing region is located on the southern plateau of the "Cerrado Climate Zone," which spans across 8 provinces in central Brazil, covering approximately 2 million square kilometers. Notably, this Cerrado savanna is the largest tropical savanna (also known as tropical cerrado) in South America, rich in native plants and animals, with climate and ecological characteristics distinctly different from the Amazon region in northern Brazil.

The flat and open terrain of the savanna is particularly suitable for establishing large estates here. Combined with distinct dry and wet seasons, as well as the relatively cool climate of the plateau, coffee cherries in this region tend to mature uniformly. This has allowed the Cerrado region to stand out among Brazil's numerous coffee growing areas, becoming synonymous with high-quality Brazilian beans.

Today, Cerrado has become a famous coffee-producing region. Its coffee is cultivated on flat plateaus at around 1,000 meters above sea level through large-scale mechanized farming. The unique soil and abundant groundwater are essential ecological conditions for producing high-quality coffee beans in Cerrado. The fertile soil and favorable climate of Cerrado are inherent, with an average annual temperature of around 21°C. The local soil is extremely fertile, rich in minerals, which allows the coffee beans to receive ample nutrition.

In recent years, Brazilian coffee has been precisely differentiated by processing methods (washed, semi-washed, honey, and natural). These methods have enhanced the characteristics of Brazilian coffee, developing various flavors, textures, and aftertastes that are completely different from traditional Brazilian coffee. The honey process, semi-washed, and natural methods perform particularly well, resulting in cleaner coffee with increased low-acidity fruit aromas and reduced intense chocolate flavors.

Currently, Brazilian Cerrado coffee has become synonymous with high-quality coffee. In 2005, high-quality Arabica coffee harvested from Cerrado was officially certified as "Cerrado Coffee" by the Brazilian government according to international standards, and it is recognized as such. To use the Cerrado designation within the region, producers must pass certification tests and meet production quality standards:

For green bean evaluation, conditions must include certified growing region, production area elevation, confirmed variety, optimal soil, and best agricultural techniques. In terms of quality, beans must score above 75 points using SCAA evaluation methods to be granted the Cerrado designation.

Knowledge Point: Over 30 years ago, the Cerrado region was actually unknown to the world. It once existed as a desolate mountain, quietly situated in Brazil. Therefore, "Cerrado" means "savanna" or "wild land" in Portuguese.
